A fish pond pump, waterfall, or fountain can be a fantastic addition to any preformed pond, however with anything involving both electricity and water, it's important to do your homework before installing.
- Always use a plug with a GFI (ground fault interrupter)
This is the type of plug you'll find in the bathroom - where if there's too much power or socket thinks it's hit water it'll close off.
This is very important as if there is some sort of fault, it will shut the electricity off immediately.
- Protect any cabling with plastic tubing
This is usually available for electrical cords to prevent people like me from accidentally digging into them!
You can usually cover up unsightly cords with tactfully placed rocks and shrubs.
- Ensure you have enough power
Take the total height that the water will need to travel, and add about a foot.
It's easier to adjust the pressure downwards with a valve than it is to have to return for a brand new pump because you require more output
- Hire a professional for pump installation
An electrician knows what he's doing with the installation here - even with a proper GFI switch, you should always take precautions.
